Iran Defense Chief Visits Syria for Military Talks
Iran's Defense Minister of Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh arrived in the Syrian capital on Saturday at the official invitation of his counterpart as Tehran and Damascus seek to further strengthen military ties.
Upon his arrival in Damascus at the head of a delegation, Brig. Gen. Nasirzadeh said he will hold talks with high-ranking political and military officials to examine various aspects of the bilateral relations between the two nations, "with a particular focus on defense and military matters".“Our objective is to identify strategies to enhance these sectors. Hopefully, the relations between the two countries will evolve in such a way that we can provide mutual assistance in sensitive situations,” he added.The minister noted that Syria has an important position in Iran’s foreign policy.
The trip came amid the Israeli regime’s ongoing air attacks on Syria, the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.Since 2011, Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy, as a result of which Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL) and other terror groups emerged in the country.Iran maintains an advisory mission in the war-ravaged country at the request of Damascus, helping it in the face of foreign-backed terrorism.
