6 Candidates Qualified to Run for President in Iran
The Guardian Council of Iran approved the qualification of six applicants for the race in the upcoming presidential election ahead of a snap vote to replace the late President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi, who lost his life in a helicopter crash.
Iran’s Interior Ministry on Sunday released the final list of candidates, who were approved by the 12-member Guardian Council to run in late June’s presidential election.According to a statement released by the interior ministry, the list includes Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Saeed Jalili, Alireza Zakani, Mosoud Pezashkian, Amir Hossein Ghazi Zadeh Hashemi and Mostafa Pour Mohammadi.The Iranian vetting body was examining the qualifications of 80 candidates who registered to run for president for days. Candidates must be between the ages of 40 and 75 and have at least a master’s degree, according to Iran’s electoral law.The qualified candidates can now start their election campaigns. Iran's presidential election is slated for June 28.
The election was originally slated for 2025 but was brought forward following the demise of President Rayeesi in the tragic incident on May 19.Rayeesi and seven members of his entourage, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, were killed when their aircraft came down on a fog-shrouded mountainside in Northern Iran.Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has since assigned Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as caretaker president in accordance with the constitution.#Iran#Presidential_Election
