Iranian Investigators Dismiss Onboard Blast in Late President Helicopter Before Crash
A second investigation report by Iran’s General Staff of Armed Forces concluded that there was no onboard explosion that could have caused the helicopter carrying President Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi and several other officials to crash in the country’s remote Northwest earlier this month, ruling out sabotage as the reason behind the tragic incident.
The probe into the aviation accident that claimed the lives of President Rayeesi, Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian and six others said there’s no evidence that the helicopter had been sabotaged during the flight.“Considering the sampling and tests conducted on the remains and parts of the helicopter and the pattern of their dispersion and the distance of the parts separated from the main body, the occurrence of an explosion due to sabotage during the flight and moments before the impact on the mountain slopes is ruled out,” it added. The report also stressed “no traces of electronic warfare were observed on the crashed helicopter".
Rayeesi, Amir Abdollahian, Tabriz Friday Prayer Leader Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, Governor of East Azerbaijan Province Malik Rahmati and four others lost their lives in a helicopter crash in the Dizmar forest, nestled between the cities of Varzaqan and Jolfa in East Azarbaijan Province on May 19.The mountainous area was very foggy, making it difficult for rescuers to search. Rescue teams finally managed to locate the crash site after an hours-long search in difficult weather on May 20. The wreckage was discovered in a wooded area on a mountain slope. The aircraft was severely damaged and charred. On May 24, the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces released its first report on the aspects and reasons behind the incident. An investigative team tasked with examining the incident was dispatched to the site of the crash on Monday, the report said. The team, it added, had managed to glean “a remarkable part” of the information it needed to investigate the elements that could have contributed to the incident. The helicopter carrying the dignitaries crashed while flying along its pre-planned route, the report stated, noting that the aircraft did not deviate from the course. The helicopter caught fire after crashing into a mountainous area, the report noted, and revealed that the remainder of the wreckage did not bear any bullet holes or signs of similar impact.
The second report also said the examination of documents related to the maintenance and repair of the crashed helicopter showed no issues that could have contributed to the accident. It ruled out any communication system malfunction or frequency interference preventing the presidential helicopter from contacting the flight group. The examination of tests and analysis of data will continue until the main cause of the incident is discovered, it added.#Iran#Ebrahim_Rayeesi#Hossein_Amirabdollahian#Helicopter_Crash
