Report: US Pressuring Egyptian Military Aid over Trump’s Gaza Plan

The Pentagon has begun to pressure Egypt into going along with President Donald Trump’s plan to expel Palestinians from the Gaza Strip by raising the possibility of cutting US military aid, Israeli media reported.
Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported the development even as Arab countries in the region have publicly and privately expressed their staunch opposition to Trump’s proposal.Trump said at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week that the US "will take over the Gaza Strip", "own it" and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East". He doubled down this week by saying Palestinians wouldn't have the right to return to Gaza, saying of the region, "I would own this".Trump also suggested the US could cut back assistance to Egypt and Jordan, a threat that was waved off by Egyptian officials. The decision has been roundly condemned by the vast majority of Democrats, allied governments, and international bodies.Egypt and Jordan have so far refused to take in any additional displaced Palestinians, and Saudi Arabia has flatly rejected the suggestion.
Since 1946, the United States has given Egypt more than $85bln in bilateral foreign aid, including military and economic assistance, according to the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt. And Egypt was the fifth-largest recipient of US foreign aid in 2023, receiving $1.45bn, 85 percent of which was for the military sector. With American support, Israel committed genocide in Gaza between October 7, 2023 and January 19, 2025, leaving about 160,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 14,000 missing. The military campaign has turned much of the enclave of 2.3 million people into ruins, leaving most civilians homeless and at risk of famine. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November last year for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
