UNRWA Warns Sanitary Conditions in Gaza Worsening by Day
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned on Monday that disease-spreading insects and rodents are threatening people’s health and wellbeing in the besieged and bombarded territory.
“UNRWA teams are working to help displaced families in shelters stop them from invading people’s already crammed living spaces,” UNRWA said in a post on X.Rubbish has been piling up across Gaza after Israel seized control of the territory’s two main landfills, East of the cities of Khan Younis and Gaza City.On Sunday, the United Nations confirmed the completion of the first phase of the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip, but warned that the risk of other diseases remains high due to unsanitary conditions in the besieged enclave.“The spread of many other diseases remains a threat amid unsanitary conditions”, the international body warned.“Piles of trash keep growing & sewage floods the streets. Greater access to aid for clean water & hygiene supplies is urgent,” it added.The World Health Organization (WHO) also announced, “Ultimately, we need a long-lasting ceasefire as all families in the Gaza Strip need peace so they can begin to heal and rebuild their lives.”
With Gaza lying in ruins and the majority of its 2.3 million residents forced to flee their homes due to Israel’s military assault – often taking refuge in cramped and unsanitary conditions – disease has spread.Israel has continued a brutal offensive on Gaza since a Hamas attack last October despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire.The Israeli onslaught has displaced almost the entire population of the territory amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.More than 41,200 victims, mostly women and children, have since been killed and more than 95,400 injured, according to local health authorities. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble in Gaza.Israel faces accusations of genocide for its actions in Gaza at the International Court of Justice.
